The most durable upholstery fabrics are generally considered to be densely woven fabrics, chenilles made from synthetic fibres, modern velours and microfibre. These materials resist abrasion, stretching, wearing through and other mechanical damage. Many of them have additional protective finishes that make it easier to remove stains, dirt and pet hair. The Martindale test is also an important indicator of durability – good-quality fabrics achieve over 50,000 cycles.

The most frequently chosen upholstery materials are woven fabrics with a clearly defined weave, soft velours, and chenilles with a thicker, plush surface that is pleasant to the touch.

Velour with a water-repellent finish works well as a sofa upholstery material. It is soft, durable and easy to clean, and the fabric’s tight structure reduces the risk of pet hair becoming embedded and of snagging.

At the moment there is great interest in bouclé fabrics with their characteristic looped texture, classic velour and velvet, and corduroy, which is back in favour. Materials with a pronounced texture, three-dimensional weave and muted, natural colours are particularly fashionable.

Velour has a smooth, striking surface with a slight sheen, but it can easily show marks from touch. Chenille is softer and plusher, giving a cosier effect and better hiding signs of everyday use. Velour suits interiors with an elegant character, while chenille is the more practical choice where comfort and functionality matter.

Abrasion resistance indicates how well an upholstery fabric resists friction and gradual wear during use. It is measured in the Martindale test, in which the material is rubbed repeatedly under a set pressure. The more cycles the fabric withstands, the more durable and resistant to everyday use it is.

Chenille is a durable fabric with a soft, plush surface that feels pleasant to the touch. Its characteristic fibres give the material an elegant look and a subtle sheen.

For sofa upholstery, a suitable fabric weight is usually 300–500 g/m², as it gives the material the right thickness and strength. However, its quality also depends on the density of the weave and abrasion resistance, which have a big impact on the durability of the upholstery.

The designation 100% PES indicates that the material is made entirely of polyester fibres. It is a synthetic fabric made from polymers, and the abbreviation “PES” stands for polyester.

When choosing a corner sofa, pay attention to its dimensions, layout and the type of seat filling, e.g. HR foam or springs. The upholstery fabric is also important, especially if children or pets use the furniture. If the corner sofa has a sleeping function, it is also worth checking how comfortable the sleeping surface is and how easy it is to pull out.

Fashionable corner sofas today are dominated by warm, earthy colours such as beiges, creams, caramel and browns, as well as deep shades of green, navy and burgundy. Cool grey is increasingly giving way to more natural colours that bring warmth, elegance and a cosy feel to a room.

Abrasion resistance is 70,000 cycles. This result is important when choosing upholstery for furniture in regular use, as it shows how well the material copes with repeated friction during everyday use.

Miscanto scored 4-5 in the pilling resistance test. This is a very good result, indicating that the material has little tendency to form bobbles and fuzz on its surface.

Colour fastness to rubbing has been rated 4-5 dry and 5 wet. This means very good colour durability when the surface is touched and rubbed, including in damp conditions.

Light fastness is 5. This is a very good result in terms of colour durability. Even so, it is worth checking the sample in your own home, as the same colour can look different depending on the type of lighting.

Miscanto combines a chenille structure with abrasion resistance of 70,000 cycles, high pilling resistance and very good colour fastness results. The fabric is also flame-retardant, which is an additional performance feature when choosing upholstery.

The weight is 430 g/m² with a tolerance of ±5%. This figure indicates the mass of one square metre of material and helps you compare its construction with other upholstery fabrics. Combined with the chenille structure, it gives a better idea of the character and presence of the material.
