Which nursing chair should you choose? Your place for the most important moments.
- by Damian Jerzy Zadora
Do you remember that childhood moment when your mother was feeding your younger siblings, and you could snuggle up next to them in the big armchair? Or perhaps you recall your grandmother's stories of nighttime feedings by the light of a small lamp, when the whole world slept, and only she and the baby formed that intimate, warm circle?
Today, if you have to choose a nursing chair for your child, it's not just a decision about furniture – you are choosing a place where you will create your most beautiful memories, where you will be born as a family, and where every night will become a small journey through the space-time of love. For our generation of thirty-somethings, who grew up between an analog childhood and a digital adulthood, this choice holds particular significance.
We, today's parents in our thirties, are the first generation to consciously combine traditional family values with a modern parenting approach. We grew up with “Friends” and “Marvel and Herbert's Breakfast” – we have learned about different family models and different ways of being a mother. We have heard Nelly Furtado sing about motherhood and Alanis Morissette explore femininity in all its dimensions.
We still remember a time when we learned about parenting from books and from mothers, not from endless Instagram feeds. At the same time, we are the first generation to have access to every imaginable parenting guide, app, and gadget. And it is precisely this ambiguity – between tradition and modernity – that determines how we design spaces for our children.
The pop culture of our youth wasn't particularly rich in realistic depictions of breastfeeding. “Sex and the City” focused more on single life than on motherhood, and “Friends” primarily showed the humorous aspects of raising children. Only later series like “Modern Family” and “This Is Us” began to portray real, unidealized moments of parenthood.
But perhaps that's precisely why we have greater freedom in shaping our motherhood? Our mothers often had only one model: the white plastic nursing chair. We can choose between elegant Scandinavian design, restored vintage treasures, or modern, multifunctional furniture.
This generation, which remembers MTV as its source of music, also has a different approach to interior design. Personalization is up to you, you design it yourself – and this also applies to our children's rooms. We want them to be functional but also to reflect our personality and values.

Our work tells the stories of different people from different eras and generations – learn from them. Our grandmothers breastfed wherever they could – at the kitchen table, on the bed, in individual living room chairs. It was practical, but not always comfortable during those long, nighttime feeding sessions.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the first specialized nursing chairs appeared on the market – mostly plastic, white, hospital-style. Functional? Yes. Beautiful? Not necessarily. Our mothers used them with humility, valuing functionality over aesthetics.
The turn of the 21st century was a time when design met functionality. The first manufacturers realized that a nursing chair could be both beautiful and practical. Today, there are chairs that can serve as elegant living room or bedroom furniture after breastfeeding.
You are someone. You are valuable. And your well-being while breastfeeding your child is also important. As a generation aware of its needs and rights, we know that self-care is not selfish, but necessary.
The seat height is crucial. The seat must allow for comfortable foot placement on the floor, which reduces back strain during long feeding sessions. Remember that in the first months of a baby's life, we spend up to 6-8 hours a day in the seat.
Armrests at the right height are not a luxury, but a necessity. They must support the arms high enough so that you don't have to lean over the baby. Wide armrests allow for a stable armrest position and additional pillows for feeding.
Head and neck support – this aspect is often overlooked, but for us, who still remember times when personal comfort was not a given, it is particularly important. A high backrest allows for true relaxation during breastfeeding.
The ability to rock – whether a classic rocking chair or a modern swivel mechanism with a rocking function – was often unavailable to our mothers. The gentle movement not only calms the baby but also contributes to the mother's relaxation.

Our generation is the first to consciously move away from a uniform, universal model of motherhood. Perhaps you are a minimalist mother who appreciates Scandinavian simplicity? An armchair in light colors, made of natural wood and environmentally friendly fabrics works well – something that will fit perfectly into your minimalist living room after breastfeeding.
Or perhaps you are a vintage fan who still remembers the era of vinyl records and VHS tapes? A refurbished 1970s wingback chair with velvet upholstery will create the perfect atmosphere for nighttime meals under the glow of a Tiffany lamp.
Perhaps you are an urban mother who has to juggle career and motherhood? A modern, multifunctional armchair with a USB port for charging your phone, a bookshelf, and the ability to work on your laptop would be perfect.
Are you an environmentally conscious parent who values natural materials and sustainable production? A chair made of certified wood and upholstered with organic cotton will reflect your values.
There is no single right choice – only the one that fits your personality, your lifestyle, and your dreams of how you want to experience motherhood.
We, today's thirty-somethings, are the last generation to remember the time before smartphones, but the first to fully embrace technology in parenting. Modern nursing chairs often feature integrated USB ports for charging phones (because who among us hasn't scrolled through Instagram during a three-hour feeding session at 4 AM?).
More and more chairs are equipped with Bluetooth speakers – we can listen to our Spotify playlists, parenting podcasts, or just white noise for the baby. Some models have integrated reading lights with adjustable brightness – perfect for those nighttime moments when we want to read a book or check a feeding tracker.
Apps for controlling the car seat? Yes, that is already a reality. We can control rocking, heating, and even massage via smartphone. What sounds like science fiction from the movies of our youth is now part of the everyday life of modern parents.
Loving the warmth of home is not just a motto – it is the promise that every moment you spend in this armchair will become part of your family's history. This is the place where you first look deeply into your child's eyes, hear their first contented squeal, and feel the incredible bond between mother and child in the silence of the night.
But it is also a place where you cry from exhaustion at three in the morning, where you wonder if you can do it, and where you experience the whole spectrum of emotions – from ecstasy to exhaustion. This chair will witness your journey as a mother.
For our generation, who grew up with the idea of documenting everything, this chair can also become the backdrop for thousands of photos – first smiles, everyday moments of closeness, family traditions that we are still creating.

As the first generation of environmentally conscious parents, in addition to functionality, we also pay attention to the material of our chairs. Does the wood come from certified forests? Are the fabrics free of harmful substances? Does the manufacturer treat its employees fairly?
Tips for eco-friendly furniture renovation – perhaps it's worth looking for a vintage armchair that we can restore with eco-friendly paints and organic fabrics? This way, a unique piece of furniture with history is created that will benefit not only us but perhaps also the next generation.
Another trend is modular chairs that can adapt to changing needs. Today a feeding chair, next year a place for reading, and in a few years a comfortable chair for working from home.
And finally, the most important truth: a nursing chair is not just a place where you nurse your baby – it is a place where you are born as a mother and as a family. Here, in this familiar space, the first memories, the first traditions, and the first stories you will tell your child in years to come are created.
Perhaps it's a story about how you listened to the same song together every night? How your child always fell asleep to the sound of a certain audiobook? How you read your first books in this armchair, talked about dreams, and planned adventures?
We know that choosing the high chair forms the foundation for the most important moments of your shared life. Whether minimalist Scandinavian design, a vintage treasure, or a high-tech solution of the future – what matters is that it tells your unique family story.

Autumn colors at home – shades that bring peace and warmth
Do you remember autumn from your childhood, when the leaves changed color like a kaleidoscope, and your mom would pull out the pumpkin-colored sweater she'd worn since college? Or those evenings in front of the TV while a storm raged outside, and the lamplight in the house gave everything a warm, amber hue? Those were the days when no one talked about "color palettes" or "color stories"—colors simply existed, as natural as breathing. At Pillovely, we believe that autumn colors aren't a trend—they're a return to what makes us feel safe.
